Seventh Inning Sac Fly Leads Softball to 3-2 Series Opening Victory at Eckerd

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Saint Leo University softball team extended its win streak to five games with a 3-2 series opening victory at Eckerd on Friday night. Backed behind another complete game performance by sophomore pitcher Haleigh Thomas, the Lions scattered a trio of runs across seven innings to earn the SSC victory over the Tritons. With the win the Lions improved to 35-14 overall and 19-6 in SSC play.

Alyssa Perez and Madyson Coe each recorded a pair of hits accounting for four of the Lions' seven hits. Thomas pitched seven innings of two run softball allowing three hits while striking out nine and walking five for her 14th win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saint Leo got on the board early in the top of the first as Alexis Barber led off the game with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Shyanne Waller. Alyssa Perez drove in the first run of the game on an infield single to the shortstop.
  • Eckerd responded in the bottom of the first with a two out solo shot to left center.
  • The Tritons took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-out RBI infield hit to the shortstop to put runners on the corners. After a stolen base put a pair of Tritons in scoring position, Thomas got a ground out to short to end the threat and limit the damage to a single run.
  • Perez reached on a fielder's choice in the top of third and as the Tritons attempted to get the lead runner, a throwing error allowed Barber to score on the play to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Over the next three innings the pitching was efficient on both sides. Eckerd opened the bottom of the fifth with a lead off walk, but the runner was erased as she was called out for leaving the base early. Thomas got out of the inning unscathed stranding a runner on second.
  • Saint Leo loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth. Coe hit her team-leading 13th double of the season with one out and back-to-back walks by Briana Neal and Hope Epps loaded the bases with two outs. However, the home team ended the threat with a fly out to left.
  • Thomas stranded a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth getting a pair of strikeouts to send the game to the final inning.
  • Sydney Cline opened the top of the seventh with a lead off double to right center. Caroline Barwick came on to pinch run for Cline and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Barber. Shyanne Waller hit a sacrifice fly to left allowing Barwick to tag up and score the go-ahead run. The Lions threat continued as Perez singled to right center and Coe got on via a hit by pitch but the home team ended the top of the seventh getting a pop up to shortstop.
  • Thomas pitched a clean 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh getting a pair of strikeouts swinging and a pop up to first base to seal the victory.
