#4 Baseball Completes Series Sweep of Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Saint Leo baseball team swept Lynn in a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) doubleheader and completed the series sweep in the process as the Lions won game one 9-6 followed by a 3-1 victory in game two.

Game One: #4 Saint Leo 9, Lynn 6

The Lions exploded out of the gates to a 5-0 lead after the first two innings. Graduate student Buck Anderson drove in the opening run on a single to center field followed by junior Dylan McDonald plating a pair of runs in the second with a single through the left side before McDonald scored on an error by the shortstop. Mass eventually crossed home plate as Anderson singled to the pitcher. In the fourth inning, the Fighting Knights got on the board with a solo home run, 5-1. Saint Leo continued to mount momentum as graduate student Yazael Nunez blasted a double to score junior Callan Moss in the fifth. Graduate student Zach Benson singled through the right side as Nunez scored and extended the Lions lead to 7-1.

In the seventh inning, senior Josh Davis launched a solo homer to left field as the Green and Gold held a commanding 8-1 advantage. Lynn answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the seventh to trim its deficit to 8-3. Saint Leo added another run in the eighth as senior Caleb Adams stole third and then scored following an error, 9-4. In the ninth, the Fighting Knights rallied with a pair of runs to cut the Lion lead to 9-6, however, Saint Leo held Lynn at bay to secure the victory.

Anderson finished the game with two hits and one RBI while Nunez recorded a 2-for-4 plate appearance and drove in a pair of runs while Benson went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Mass rounded the bases twice and Moss recorded two RBI. On the mound, senior Evan Wolf started for the Green and Gold and tallied six strikeouts while allowing three runs (all earned) on eight hits in 8.0 innings as he collected the win. In relief, senior Drew Rudsinski earned the save as he pitched 0.2 innings.

Game Two: #4 Saint Leo 3, Lynn 1

Senior Mikey Scott got the Lions offense going in the first inning with an RBI-groundout to score Mass. Benson gave Saint Leo a 2-0 lead in the second with an RBI-groundout to second base. In the fifth, Scott registered another run for Saint Leo following a single to center field as he plated McDonald. For the remainder of the game, defense and pitching was the name of the game as both team for the next three innings until Lynn notched an RBI-double in the ninth with two outs and cut its deficit to 3-1.

Scott recorded two hits and two RBI in game two while McDonald also posted a pair of hits and scored once. Mass, Nunez and Moss each tallied a hit. Senior Aedan Walter started game two for the Lions and registered seven strikeouts as he limited the Fighting Knights to five hits and zero runs in 8.0 innings. In relief, graduate student Nick Jennings earned the save and ended the game with a strikeout to post the save.

The Lions return to action on Friday, April 26 as they host Eckerd in an SSC showdown at 6 p.m.
