BOCA RATON, Fla. – The 20th-ranked Saint Leo men's lacrosse team earned a 13-11 Sunshine State Conference (SSC) road victory at Lynn on Saturday evening as senior
Guy Bistrow registered a career-best six goals.
The Lions started the scoring early as sophomore
Isaac Wills notched the game's first goal within the first 40 seconds of the initial faceoff. Bistrow followed with a goal at the 13:43-mark off a dish from sophomore
Greg Palmer. The Fighting Knights scored at the 12:11-mark as they trimmed their deficit to 2-1. However, Bistrow went back-to-back with a pair of goals to give the Green and Gold a 4-1 cushion. Lynn answered with a four-goal run as it gained a 5-4 advantage with 1:48 left in the first quarter. Sophomore
Aidan Knoetgen found the back of the net off a pass from Bistrow to tie the game at 5-5 heading into the second frame.
For the first nine minutes of the second quarter, both teams were held scoreless until sophomore
Matthew Cleary laced a goal as the Lions led by a 6-5 margin. After the Fighting Knights scored, Palmer and Cleary tallied goals to give Saint Leo an 8-6 edge. With 30 seconds remaining in the first half, Lynn scored to as it trailed 8-7 at halftime.
Both defenses were stout in the third quarter as the teams managed to score just one goal each with the Lions leading 9-8 to start the final frame. The Fighting Knights tied the game at 9-9 to start the quarter before Palmer and Bistrow found the back of the net, 11-9. Wills assisted Knoetgen and Bistrow on their next goals to extend the Lions advantage to 13-10. Lynn posted a goal with a little over two minutes left in regulation before being held scoreless for the rest of the game.
Bistrow led the Lions with seven total points that included six goals and one assist. Willis recorded five assists and one goal while Palmer posted a pair of goals and two assists. Knoetgen and Cleary collected two goals and one assist each. Senior
Michael Flores went 20-for-25 on faceoffs and tied a career-high 18 groundballs. Sophomore
Owen Wills also collected three groundballs and caused and turnover while junior
Jake Galzerano recorded three groundballs as well. In the net, senior
Chase Strait posted seven saves in the complete-game effort.
The Lions return to the field on Wednesday, April 3 as they host Florida Southern at 7 p.m. in conference play.
