SAINT LEO, Fla. – In a game that featured three ties and a pair of lead changes, the seventh-ranked Saint Leo baseball team earned an 8-7 over West Georgia in a non-conference bout at Thomas B. Southard Stadium on Wednesday night.
In the bottom of the eighth, sophomore
Dylan Mass came through in the clutch with the score tied 8-8 as he singled through the middle to drive in senior
Cooper Miles for the winning run.
After the Wolves were able the build a 4-0 advantage in the fourth inning, the Lions quickly answered with an RBI-single from graduate student
Luke Houin followed by a sacrifice-fly from graduate student
Zach Benson to tie the game at 2-2. West Georgia regained the lead in the fifth, however, senior
Josh Davis blasted a double to left field to plate a pair of runs that gave Saint Leo a 4-3 edge. In the sixth, the Lions broke another tie with three runs that included an RBI-double from senior
Caleb Adams followed by Miles scoring on a wild pitch and capped off by Adams stealing home as the Lions led by a 7-4 margin. However, the top of the eighth, the Wolves scored a trio of runs on a triple to tie game at 7-7 before Mass' game-winning hit in the bottom half of the eighth.
To close the door on West Georgia, junior
Jacob Young tallied a pair of strikeouts in the ninth as he earned the save on 13 pitches in 1.0 innings. Sophomore
Sam Cole started on the mound for Saint Leo and he registered a career-best eight strikeouts while allowing two runs on four hits in 4.0 innings of work. In relief, senior
Kaelan Racculia collected the win as he posted two strikeouts in 2.2 innings on the bump.
Davis finished the game with two hits and two RBI while Adams recorded two hits and one RBI. Mass walked twice and registered a hit with an RBI. Houin went 1-for-3 at the plate while Miles scored twice and posted a hit.
Saint Leo returns to the diamond on Friday, March 22 as it hosts Embry-Riddle in the first game of the three-game weekend series, starting at 6 p.m.
