SAINT LEO, Fla. – The fifth-ranked Saint Leo University women's tennis team opened the 2024 Sunshine State Conference play with a battle against Florida Southern College at home on Thursday afternoon. The Lions took the doubles point before closing out a 2-2 tie with a pair of singles wins to defeat the Mocs, 4-3.
The Lions opened the match winning the doubles point 2-1. Saint Leo got back-to-back doubles wins at number three and number one.
Kamilya Shailina and
Madelyn Martin won 6-1 to start the match on a winning note for the home team.
Luzia Obermeier and
Lavinia Lancellotti defeated their opponent 6-4 to clinch the doubles point for Saint Leo. Florida Southern earned a 7-5 win at number two doubles to prevent a Saint Leo doubles sweep.
With wins at singles number two, five, and six the Lion's clinched the match and SSC victory over the Mocs. Southern tied the match at 1-1 with a number four singles win but Obermeier put the Lions back on top with a pair of 6-3 set victories. After a Mocs win at number three singles, Saint Leo rallied off wins at number five and six singles to clinch the victory.
Camila Keller won in straight sets while
Claudia Borbon Roca rallied from a set one loss with back-to-back 6-2 wins to secure the win over the Mocs. Florida Southern closed out the match with a number one singles victory.
