SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo University women's basketball team dropped a 70-52 Sunshine State Conference match up to Rollins College on Wednesday night. The Lions jumped out to a 35-26 halftime lead but strong second half for the Tars helped them leave with a victory.
The game started with promise for the Lions, as they jumped out to an early lead, outscoring Rollins 22-14 in the first quarter. Aaliyah Irizarry-Perez led Rollins' comeback effort, finishing the game with an impressive 15 points and 8 rebounds. Despite their efforts, the Lions struggled to maintain their momentum in the subsequent quarters.
Faith Newton and Claire Erickson contributed 12 points each for Rollins, while Maddie Dillinger provided a spark off the bench with 14 points, showcasing Rollins' depth and offensive versatility.
For the Lions,
Taydra Simpson led the team with 11 points and showcased her defensive prowess with 2 steals.
Chynna Mattair added 11 points of her own, including a clutch three-pointer, while
Andjela Pavicevic contributed 9 points in a balanced scoring effort.
Despite their best efforts, the Lions were unable to overcome Rollins' offensive firepower, as Rollins shot 41.5% from the field compared to Saint Leo's 32.0%. Additionally, Rollins capitalized on their opportunities at the free-throw line, shooting an impressive 82.6% for the game.
The Lions fought valiantly throughout the game, but ultimately came up short against a tough Rollins team. With a determined mindset and unwavering spirit, the Lions will regroup and look to bounce back in their upcoming matchups. The Marion Bowman Center saw an attendance of 258 passionate fans who witnessed a hard-fought battle between two talented teams, showcasing the competitive spirit of Sunshine State Conference basketball.
Saint Leo is off this weekend before hitting the road to take on Florida Southern (Feb. 14).
