Softball Sweeps Day Two of Gulf Shores Invitational to Secure Kinberger's 300th Saint Leo Win

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The 18th-ranked Saint Leo University Lions softball team captured a memorable sweep on day two of the Gulf Shores Invitational. With two wins on Saturday, head coach Erin Kinberger secured her 299th and 300th wins in her Saint Leo career becoming just the second head coach in program history to hit 300.

Saint Leo jumped all over Valdosta State early in game one using a seven-run second inning en route to a 10-4 victory. Game two was a closer battle as Auburn Montgomery responded with runs of its own after Saint Leo scored but the Lions held on for a 6-5 win.

Saint Leo 10, Valdosta State 4
  • After both teams went down in order in the first inning, the Lions broke the game wide open in the top of the second, batting around and scoring seven runs. Both Madyson Coe and Jayla Brooks went 1-for-2 in the second inning as Saint Leo rallied off eight hits including six consecutive two-out base hits followed by Coe's two-RBI double to make it a 7-0 game.
  • Haleigh Thomas scored the eighth SLU run as the Lions benefited from a throwing error by the Blazers third baseman.
  • Valdosta State tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fourth as the Lions shutout ended on a wild pitch and then promptly cleared the bases with a two-run homer to left cutting the Lions lead to 8-3.
  • For the second consecutive plate appearance, Neal reached on an error that saw a run score as Morgan Shannon scored to put the Lions back up by a touchdown, 9-3 in the fifth inning.
  • Saint Leo opened the top of the sixth with three straight hits as Jayla Brooks drove in Alexis Barber for the tenth Lions run. After the Lions loaded the bases, the Blazers got a bit of luck as Saint Leo hit into a triple play to end the top of the sixth.
  • Despite allowing a run in the seventh inning, Tierney Hocquard needed just nine pitches to close out the game to secure the win for the Lions.
  • Shannon got the start for the Lions in the circle and allowed a single hit the first time through the Blazers lineup. Valdosta State touched up Shannon for three runs on a wild pitch and a two-run homer in the fourth inning but that was all the scoring the Blazers managed off the Lions starter.
Saint Leo 6, Auburn Montgomery 5
  • The pitching on both sides was lights out as Alyssa Perez doubled to right in the bottom of the first and was the only base runner through the top of the third.
  • Saint Leo opened the scoring in the bottom of the third plating two runs on a foul out and a passed ball. Perez fouled out to right field as an alert Caroline Barwick tagged up on third and put Saint Leo up 1-0. Neal followed right behind her as she scored on a passed ball making it 2-0 Lions.
  • After a sac fly in the top of the fourth cut the Lions lead in half, senior catcher Madyson Coe got one back for the Lions. Coe sent a rocket over the right field wall for her first career home run.
  • The Lions put up a crooked number in the fourth as Neal's infield hit saw two more runners cross the plate making it a 5-1 Saint Leo advantage.
  • Proving to be a back-and-forth game, the Warhawks used a pair of solo shots in the top of the fifth to cut the Lions lead back down to two.
  • Saint Leo was gifted its sixth run in the bottom of the fifth as Amel Salman scored on a passed ball with the bases loaded.
  • AUM plated a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to make it a one-run game.
  • After the Lions went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, Hocquard sent the Warhawks down in order in the seventh to secure the win and pick up her first save of the season.
Inside the numbers
  • Head coach Erin Kinberger secured her 300th Saint Leo win, making her just second in program history to hit that milestone
  • Kayla Betts pitched 4.1 innings and struck out six batters bringing her career total to 543.
  • Briana Neal accounted for all three of Saint Leo's home runs in 2023. Through four games in 2024 the Lions are one homer shy of matching that mark. Hailey Beuerlein and Madyson Coe each have gone yard in 2024, marking the first collegiate home run for both.

Saint Leo closes out the 2024 Gulf Shores Invitational on Sunday with games against #1 North Georgia and West Florida.
