SAINT LEO, Fla. – After building a 4-0 advantage in the first inning, the 10th-ranked Saint Leo baseball team captured a 6-2 victory at home versus Valdosta State in non-conference action on Tuesday night.
Junior Callen Moss launched a three-run double down the left field line as he drove in senior
Josh Davis, sophomore
Dylan Mass, and graduate student
Buck Anderson in the first inning. Following a throwing error by the Blazers, Moss crossed home plate as the Lions grasped a 4-0 edge. However, Valdosta State climbed back within two runs as it scored on an RBI-single in the third inning followed by a one-run single in the fifth, 4-2.
The Green and Gold answered as in the bottom of the fifth as junior
Dylan McDonald scored Moss from third on a double to center field. Saint Leo claimed a 6-2 lead in the seventh as senior
Yazael Nunez hit a single to right center, driving in Davis in the process.
Starting on the mound for the Lions was freshman
Russell Sandefer as he tallied six strikeouts and only allowed two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings as he claimed his first-career win in his collegiate debut. In relief, graduate student
Nick Jennings closed the book on the Blazers as he struck out three batters in the ninth.
At the dish, Moss led the Lions' offensive charge as he went 3-for-3 with a trio of RBI while scoring twice and being walked two times. Mass was 2-for-3 at the plate as he crossed the home once and reached base on-balls twice. Senior
Cooper Miles notched two hits on four at-bats while McDonald and Nunez each recorded a hit and drove in a run.
Saint Leo returns to action on Friday, March 1 as it hosts Barry in a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) matchup at 6 p.m.
