Theus Finds Second Half Equalizer for Women's Soccer in 1-1 Draw Against Lynn

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Franziska Theus found the equalizer in the 52nd minute as Saint Leo University Women's Soccer earned a 1-1 draw against the Lynn Fighting Knights on Saturday night at the Saint Leo Soccer Field. Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Goetzer made the seven saves in the draw. The Lions and the Fighting Knights each earn a point in the SSC standings as Saint Leo remains a point up on the Fighting Knights. Saint Leo is now 7-3-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the SSC while Lynn is now 4-5-4 overall and 2-2-4 in conference action.

Goetzer made a single save in the opening half but ended the night with seven as she continued to make crucial saves to keep the Lions in contention. Saint Leo fired off just six shots as Elise McDonald led the team with three and Morgan Gamin, Ella Owen, and Theus all registered a shot on the night.

SAINT LEO 1, LYNN 1
  • Lynn was quick on the attack with an early cross that Goezter was able to intercept to prevent the visiting attack.
  • Owen took the first registered shot in the game as she sent a ball to the bottom left that the Lynn keeper was able to make the save on.
  • After being awarded a free kick, the Lions attempted to strike again as Elise McDonald took the free kick from high outside the box and got a good strike on the ball but it went sailing over the target.
  • As the opening went on the Lynn attacked turned up and the visitors put together a two-minute span that ended with a 1-0 Fighting Knights advantage. Following a shot by the visitors, the Lions took the ball back down the field but a balanced defense made the stop. Lynn sent the ball back the other way and proceeded to the goal. A loose ball was sent down the opposite touch line from the benches and played perfectly though the Lions defense. As Lynn got closer McKenna Gardner, who had the previous shot, struck the goal this time to open the scoring.
  • McDonald attempted a shot in the final 10 minutes of the first half but it went off target.
  • Saint Leo trailed 1-0 at the halftime break and wasted no time getting on the board.
  • In the 52nd minute, the Lions attacked was poised to get the equalizer as they took advantage of free kick allowing them to make something happen. As the attacked crashed the box the Ella Owen slipped a ball to Theus who quickly fired off the shot past the Lynn keeper for the equalizer.
  • The teams traded shots following the goal as Goezter made every effort to keep it knotted at 1-1.
  • Goetzer made a pair of saves in the final ten minutes as she made six saves in the second half alone.
