SAINT LEO, FL – Saint Leo Men's Tennis'
Ivan Marrero and
Martin Soukal named ITA All-Americans.
Â
Ivan Marrero finished this season with a perfect 16-0 record and was also named the SSC Athlete of the Year while featuring on the All-SSC First Team Singles. This is Marrero's first time being named as an All-American.
Â
His play in singles competition was the driving force of the Lions as he was basically a guaranteed point for Saint Leo every time he stepped on the court.
Â
Marrero finished the season with the #3 National Ranking for singles competition.
Â
"Ivan proved that he is one of the best players in Division II this year. It is not easy to go undefeated at #1 singles and he was able to do that playing arguably the best schedule of any team in the nation. Unfortunately, he had a couple matches go unfinished that could have earned him the top overall ranking this year," said Head Coach
Chad Berryhill.
Â
Martin Soukal was stellar for the Lions with a 21-3 record and was named to the All-SSC Mens First Team Singles. This is Soukal's third time being honored as an All-American throughout his collegiate career.
Â
Soukal's season will also be remembered heavily due to his clutch performance at the ITA National Indoor Championship where he secured the final point for the Lions as they were crowned National Champions.
Â
Soukal finished the season with the #20 National Ranking for singles competition.
Â
"Martin came in and had an incredible year in his first year as a Lion. He had many memorable moments this year, but I know everyone for the rest of their lives will remember when he clinched the championship match at ITA Indoors. As good as a player Martin is, he is an even better teammate and person. One of the nicest people you could ever meet and always willing to go the extra mile to help. Even though he prefers team success over individual success, he certainly deserves being named an All-American," said coach Berryhill.
