SAINT LEO, FL – Saint Leo Softball falls short of reaching day three of NCAA South Regional despite a strong effort.
Versus West Alabama
The Lions ran into a tough resilient West Alabama Tigers team that pushed them to their very limit.
The score remained tied at 0-0 heading into the fourth inning where the Lions struck gold with
Bayley Williams hitting a single down the left field line as close to foul as you can get while keeping the ball fair.
The Williams hit brought pinch-runner
Caroline Barwick home to give the Lions the 1-0 advantage.
The Lions were able to close the game and finish on top 1-0.
The main story of the game involved the Lions' ace
Kayla Betts who dominated in a big way with nine strikeouts which led her to completing a no-hitter in the NCAA South Regional.
The Lions win bought them life in the tournament as they now had a one-hour turnaround for the next game versus Auburn-Montgomery.
Versus Auburn Montgomery
Both teams battled for a spot in day three of the NCAA South Regional versus Nova Southeastern.
The score remained 0-0 once again until the fourth inning came and the Warhawks were able to find a whole in the Lions' armor thanks to a sacrifice fly and a single to left field.
Auburn-Montgomery held a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.
It was
Alyssa Perez who stepped up to give the Lions their first run of the game with a double to left field which was enough to bring in
Grace Dunsworth.
Alex Hare followed Perez with a double to center to bring in
Caroline Barwick and officially tie the game at 2-2.
The game headed into extra-innings where the Warhawks broke the deadlock and finished on top 3-2 after eight innings of softball.
The Lions incredible season which featured a record-breaking 43 wins has officially come to an end.
Many achievements have been accomplished for this Lions' team with eyes now looking forward at what could be an even better 2024 season.
