MELBOURNE, Fla. – After the #11 Saint Leo University softball team swept Eckerd over the weekend, the Lions pulled out their brooms again Monday afternoon, as the Sunshine State Conference announced that both Juniors
Kayla Betts and
Alexandra Hare were selected as the conference's athletes of the week.
Betts again earned SSC Pitcher of the Week after picking up a pair of wins and recording her fifth save on the season in Saint Leo's series sweep over the Tritons. After a complete, no-hitter Friday night, Betts came in clutch in Saturday's doubleheader, as the Eustis, Fla. native entered the seventh inning of Game Two to go 1-2-3 and preserve a 3-2 win for the Lions before entering the third inning of Game Three with the bases loaded and allowing no runs in five innings pitched.
Meanwhile, Hare was chosen as SSC Player of the Week following a nearly flawless performance at the plate, hitting a combined 9-for-10 while contributing to all game-winning runs for the Lions. Hare delivered both game-winning RBIs in Saturday's doubleheader wins and ran in the winning run Friday night.
This is Betts' sixth award of the season and seventh of her career and Hare's second of the season and third of her career.
