ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- The Saint Leo baseball team closed out their conference series with a doubleheader, Saturday April 22
nd. The Lions were able to steal the first game of the doubleheader thanks to a seventh inning balk to win, 8-7. The final game of the series lasted all the way into the 14
th inning with the Lions taking the series with the extra innings win, 3-2.
The Lions now sit at 24-17 on the season and 12-9 in the SSC.
GAME ONE:
The Lions broke into the scoring column in the top of the second inning when
Cooper Miles would belt a solo home run to left field to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
The Tritons would answer back in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game on a wild pitch.
The Lions power bats came to play early Saturday afternoon, as
Adrien Roa connected on a fastball to drive a solo homer to right field. The homer to right would be his fifth home run of the season.
Eckerd would score two unanswered runs to steal the lead from the Lions in the next two innings.
After Eckerd took a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth, the Lions would comeback in the sixth to tie the game at seven.
Yazael Nunez drove in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center.
Zach Benson would hit a one run double to right center for the second run of the inning. Roa continued to have a great afternoon at the dish, driving in his second run of the game with a one run infield single. The Lions would tie the game on a bases loaded walk drawn by
Bobby Sparling.
The Lions would score the winning run in the top of the seventh when Benson would score on a balk.
GAME TWO:
The Lions jumped out to a quick one run lead in the first inning when Benson would score on a wild pitch. The Tritons answered back to tie things up in the third.
Eckerd college would take the lead on a one run single to right field in the bottom of the fourth.
The Lions would tie the game late once again in the top of the eighth when
Mikey Scott reached on a fielding error allowing
Giuseppe Arcuri to score.
The final game of the series would go all the way into the 14
th inning. Saint Leo found their way into the scoring column during extra innings when
Mikey Scott stole second and was able to advance all the way home due to a throwing error.
The Lions will return to Thomas B. Southard Stadium to face Sunshine State Conference Opponent University of Tampa for a weekend series. First pitch in game one of their series is scheduled for Friday, April 28
th at 6 P.M.
