SAINT LEO, Fla. – The #2 Saint Leo University Women's tennis team faced a national challenge Sunday afternoon as its match against #3 Nova Southeastern provided a reality check on becoming the best in NCAA DII, falling 5-2 to the Sharks at the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
Doubles
The first doubles match featured the top two duos in NCAA DII, but the #2 double pairing of Sixth-year
Marta Vicens Miquel and Junior Lavinia Lancelotti could not best #1 Natalie Espinal and Fatima Bizhukova, falling 6-2 before Diane Follin-Arbelet and Eva Goncharov defeated Sophomores
Kamilya Shailina and
Luzia Obermeier 7-5 to win NSU the doubles point. The Sharks went for the sweep in the third doubles match and won 6-2 over Sophomores
Claudia Borbon Roca and
Jade Bellegy.
Singles
The Green & Gold were victorious in just two of the six singles matches, as #8 nationally-ranked Vicens Miquel defeated #7 nationally-ranked Julia Razafindranaly 6-3, 6-3 in the first match before Freshman
Camila Keller found her first career win over a nationally-ranked opponent in come-from-behind fashion against #73 Eva Goncharov, falling in the first set 6-3 before taking the second set 7
4-6
0 and the third set 10-8.
Saint Leo is back on the courts Wednesday for its Senior Day against Eckerd College. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
