SAINT LEO, Fla. – The #14 Saint Leo University softball team went down to the wire Friday night, as the Lions' defensive play once again led to another shut out on the season, this time against hitting powerhouse Nova Southeastern 1-0 at University Softball Stadium.
Saint Leo (32-5, 14-2 SSC) recorded five hits in the series opener, highlighted by Fifth-year outfielder
Bayley Williams' 2-for-3 performance at the plate with the game's lone RBI. Junior pitcher
Kayla Betts (16-1) nearly recorded a second no-no on the season before Nova Southeastern (24-10, 8-5 SSC) made its lone hit in the seventh. The Sharks' bats were subdued by the Leesburg, Fla. native, fanning 14 and giving up three walks in 116 total pitches.
Baserunning paid off once again for the Green & Gold, leading to the contest's only run scored in the third inning. Sophomore infielder
Shyanne Waller's leadoff single paved the way as the native of Inverness, Fla. got around the bases from sacrifice hits by Juniors
Morgan Shannon and
Alexandra Hare before being brought home via Williams' RBI single.
The Lions finish the series Saturday with doubleheader action against the Sharks; first pitch is set for Noon.
