LAKELAND, Fla. – The #1 Saint Leo men's Tennis team traveled to #24 Florida Southern College for a midweek showdown. The Lions were able to defeat the Mocs, 5-2.
"Hats off to Florida Southern today for staying in the matches," said head coach
Chad Berryhill. "We didn't get the doubles point momentum, butwe had a really good start in singles. During a few matches, we let our opponents back into the match, but our guys did a good job winning points down the stretch when we needed them."
The afternoon kicked off with the #43 pairing of
Tao Castillo Bernal and
Ivan Marrero facing the #6 pairing of Matteo Feggi and Chris Fok Kow. Florida Southern was able to take the opening doubles match, 6-4. The second doubles match featured a battle between the two teams with Florida Southern's pairing of Mario Garoz and Ryan Rajakar defeating
Ghali Mensour and
Martin Soukal, 7-6.
Nicolas Bacella and
Luis Iriarte picked up the lone doubles match for the Lions winning their match 6-2.
In singles action, #4
Ivan Marrero defeated Chris Fok Kow, 6-1 and 6-2. #18 Soukal followed suit with a win of his own defeating Inaki Braun Simo in three sets, 6-0,6-7, and 6-2. Bacella, #36 Castillo Bernal, and Iriarte closed out the afternoon with wins to lift the Lions over the Mocs, 5-2.
Saint Leo will travel to Miami Shores, Florida to battle against #4 Barry University, April 2
nd. The match is set to begin at 10:00 am.
