SAINT LEO, Fla. – The #2 Saint Leo University Women's tennis team displayed a performance worthy of being ranked the second-best in the nation Thursday evening, blowing out #3 University of Indianapolis 6-1 at the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
Even eight years later since the teams' last meeting, Saint Leo remained perfect against the Greyhounds, limiting UIndy to one point for the third time in four meetings.
DOUBLES
In all three doubles sets, the Green & Gold did not allow a Greyhound duo more than two points as the Lions swept the matches to earn the Doubles point. The veteran duo of Junior Lavinia Lancelotti and Sixth-year
Marta Vicens Miquel could not be stopped, as the sixth-best pair in the nation breezed by #7 nationally-ranked Anna Novikova and Sofia Sharanova 6-1.
There were no "sophomore slumps" in the second and third Doubles matches, as
Luzia Obermeier and
Kamilya Shailina cruised by its opposition with a 6-2 win before
Jade Bellegy and
Claudia Borbon Roca also won 6-2 to complete a sweep over UIndy.
SINGLES
Only two Lions won their respective Singles matches in straight sets: Lancelotti defeated Maria Fiacan 6-3, 6-2 and #11 Borbon Roca bested #47 Lea Cakarevic 7-5, 6-2.
After falling in their opening sets, both #50 Obermeier and #17 Vicens Miquel came back to win their matches against Diane Flament 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 and #28 Novikova 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, respectively.
"Big time win for the women beating a Top 3 team 6-1" said Head Coach
Chad Berryhill. "Doubles gave us a good boost and we played solid in the singles. Really happy for our team that has been working hard all season; glad to see it pay off today!"
Pending inclement weather, Saint Leo is back on the court Saturday with a road match against #1 Barry. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
