SAINT LEO, Fla. – Nearly a month after the #1 Saint Leo University Men's tennis team claimed the ITA Indoor National Championship in Indianapolis against UIndy, the Lions once again defeated the Greyhounds Thursday evening by a score of 4-3 at the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
In a matchup against the best teams in the nation, the Green & Gold once again won four of the first five possible points before both teams decided to count all matches.
DOUBLES
After falling in the overall Doubles matches in February, Saint Leo took the Doubles point this time, with the duo of Junior
Ivan Marrero and Graduate Tao Bernal Castillo defeating UIndy's Louis Picaud and August Ehrnroth 6-4 and Graduate
Nicolas Bacella and Junior
Luis Iriarte besting the Nikolaj Talimaa-Jason Gerweck duo 6-2. Only the nation's best doubles duo (Edgar Destouet and Tom Zeuch) downed #15 nationally-ranked Sophomore
Vincent Thiel and Fifth-year
Ghali Mensour 6-2.
SINGLES
The #5 nationally-ranked Marrero continued the Lions' momentum with a 7-5, 6-2 win over #6 nationally-ranked Destouet to extend its overall match lead 2-0 before #16 Zeuch beat #21 Fifth-year
Martin Soukal 7-6, 2-6, and 10-3 with a 3-0 tiebreaker in Singles #3.
Saint Leo extended its overall lead in Singles #4 when #26 Thiel defeated #50 Picaud 6-4, 6-3. Bacella would clinch the win for the Lions with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Talimaa. Both Iriarte and Freshman
Henrique Bertoli fell that gave the Hounds two more wins a slim 4-3 victory.
"Happy for our team today to get the win" said Head Coach
Chad Berryhill. "Doubles was a big boost and luckily we got a 4-0 clinch before dropping three matches in super tiebreakers. UIndy is a good team and played well today. Fun to play in a match where it is #1 versus #2 especially on our home courts!"
With a match against #4 Barry initially scheduled for Sunday postponed, the Lions will now turn its attention to #3 Valdosta State March 24th, as Saint Leo will make its third trip to South Georgia.
