SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University Men's basketball team travels to Tampa, Fla. Wednesday for its annual visit to the Bob Martinez Athletic Center to face the University of Tampa in another critical conference contest.
Saint Leo (17-8, 8-6 SSC) have now won four of their last five, looking to build off its thrilling 85-79 win over Embry-Riddle (Fla.) that gave the Lions a sweep over the Eagles for the first time since 2018-19. The win also marked Head Coach
Lance Randall's 400th overall win as a head coach.
The Lions enter Wednesday's game with one of the hottest scoring offenses in the nation, boasting the fourth-best field percentage (.521) and 17th-best three-point percentage (.401) in NCAA DII. Fifth-year forward
Marty Jackson leads the team in scoring average (17.3), as guards
Kanon Koster (16.2) and
Grant Disken (13.8) continue to maintain double-digit averages.
While Tampa (7-13, 6-8 SSC) may be on a two-game skid, the Spartans' resilience has never wavered. Nine of the Spartans' 13 defeats have held single digit differences, including a recent 79-77 overtime loss to Palm Beach Atlantic in which the Red & Black nearly became the first team to defeat the Sailfish in West Palm Beach, Fla. Tampa averages just over 70 points a game, allowing just under 76 points on average.
Second chances will be at a premium for Saint Leo, ranking last in the conference in offensive rebounds (8.3) while Tampa holds the most defensive boards (28.8) in the Sunshine State Conference.
Spartans' red-hot leading scorer Mykah Brown has averaged 24 points a game in the last three games, which will challenge Saint Leo's field defense (.421) that currently ties the best in the SSC.
The overall series between the Lions and Spartans is deadlocked 18-18, with Saint Leo winning nine of the last 12 contests.
Tipoff at the Bob Martinez Athletic Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Fans can follow the live action by accessing the links below:
