Softball Completes Sweep of Sailfish

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University softball team finished the weekend picking up another pair of wins Saturday, defeating Palm Beach Atlantic 6-2 in Game One of the doubleheader before winning Game Two 4-0 at Simpson Field.

Saint Leo (10-1, 3-0 SSC) tallied 10 hits while limiting Palm Beach Atlantic (5-7, 0-3 SSC) to six.  Four Lions hit 50% or better from the plate, as Junior infielders Alexandra Hare and Madyson Coe brought home two RBIs apiece.
 
At the circle, Junior pitcher Kayla Swinson (1-1) recorded her first NCAA win, pitching four innings and allowing five hits and one run.  Freshman Haleigh Thomas picked up the save, throwing three innings and giving up just one hit and one run.
 
Following a 1-0 Sailfish lead, Hare's first RBI brought in Sophomore Hope Epps to tie the game 1-1 in the third inning before the Trinity, Fla. native's other RBI came in the form of a sacrifice fly one inning later to give the Lions' its first lead of the day.  Moments later, a PBA error added two more runs for Saint Leo to extend its lead 4-1.
 
A 2RBI double from Coe in the sixth inning brought in another pair of runs for a 6-1 lead before the Sailfish scored the final run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh before a game-ending double play on the next at-bat sealed a 6-2 win for the Green & Gold.

For the second time in the series, the Lions blanked Palm Beach Atlantic, as Hare had a perfect showing at the plate (4-for-4) with one RBI and one triple.  Epps recorded one RBI and one stolen base in the contest.
 
Thomas got the start for Game Two, pitching 2.2 innings before Junior pitcher Morgan Shannon (1-0) entered the game in the third inning to allow one hit with two strikeouts to record her first win of the season.
 
The Lions' next outing will be its home opening weekend series against Barry; first pitch against the Buccaneers is slated for Friday at 6 p.m.
