ST. LOUIS, Mo. – For the second, consecutive day, the Saint Leo volleyball team went one for two, taking the first match with a 3-1 win over Southern Arkansas before dropping the later match to host University of Missouri-St. Louis 3-1 Saturday at Mark Twain Building.

The Lions (2-2) took down the Muleriders (0-4) in four sets: 29-27 in the first set, 25-22 the second set, and 25-19 in the fourth set. The Green & Gold trailed by as many as eight points in the third set (19-11) before making a comeback run that fell shy, with SAU winning the set 25-22.

The first set began in favor of the Muleriders, pushing out to an 11-5 lead before the Green & Gold responded with six, unanswered points to tie the game. SAU would hold most of the lead in the barn-burning set until the Lions closed out the frame, scoring four of the final five points.
Saint Leo set the tone in set two with two, five-point spans to build a 10-4 lead. The Lions had a lead as large as six (15-9) before the Blue & Yellow responded with a 6-1 run to tighten the difference to one point. The Lions pushed their lead out to 21-17 before the Muleriders hit another streak to retake the lead 22-21. The lead, and the set, would not last long, however, as the Green & Gold finished the set with four, unanswered points to go up 2-0 in the match.
After dropping the third set, Saint Leo finished off Southern Arkansas in the fourth set 25-19, fueled by a late 7-1 run, that gave the Lions its second win of the season.
UMSL 3, Saint Leo 1
The Lions began the match with a 4-1 lead before the Tritons (3-1) went on a 13-3 run that put UMSL ahead 14-7. After both sides exchanged two points apiece, UMSL finished the set on a 9-2 run to take the first frame.
Saint Leo had a better showing in the second frame, posting .324 hitting percentage with 15 kills en route to a 25-22 win that tied the match.
UMSL had a harsh response in the third set, jumping out to an 8-0 lead before the Lions registered its first score of the frame. Later in the set, back-to-back kills from Freshman
Brooke Kulik brought the score to 15-6 in favor of the Tritons before UMSL completed the frame with a 10-1 run.
Set Four saw the Tritons begin with an 8-3 lead before the Green & Gold tied the game with five, straight points. In the end, however, career days from UMSL powered the hosts to a 25-16 win in the fourth set and a 3-1 match win.
Saint Leo is back on the court September 2n d as the Lions travel to Lee University for the Lee Invitational. The Green & Gold will begin play against Erskine, with the match set to begin at 11 a.m.
