Lions Split Again in Day Two of UMSL Invitational

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – For the second, consecutive day, the Saint Leo volleyball team went one for two, taking the first match with a 3-1 win over Southern Arkansas before dropping the later match to host University of Missouri-St. Louis 3-1 Saturday at Mark Twain Building.

Saint Leo 3, Southern Arkansas 1
The Lions (2-2) took down the Muleriders (0-4) in four sets: 29-27 in the first set, 25-22 the second set, and 25-19 in the fourth set.  The Green & Gold trailed by as many as eight points in the third set (19-11) before making a comeback run that fell shy, with SAU winning the set 25-22.

Freshman Niamh Davies and Senior Ally-Reese Williams led the Saint Leo attack, notching 12 and 10 kills, respectively.  Senior Skylar Singleton made 29 assists in the match, as Junior Jeanette Henderson recorded 22 digs.  Junior transfer Kennedy DeLuca led all blockers with six in the contest.

The first set began in favor of the Muleriders, pushing out to an 11-5 lead before the Green & Gold responded with six, unanswered points to tie the game.  SAU would hold most of the lead in the barn-burning set until the Lions closed out the frame, scoring four of the final five points.

Saint Leo set the tone in set two with two, five-point spans to build a 10-4 lead.  The Lions had a lead as large as six (15-9) before the Blue & Yellow responded with a 6-1 run to tighten the difference to one point.  The Lions pushed their lead out to 21-17 before the Muleriders hit another streak to retake the lead 22-21.  The lead, and the set, would not last long, however, as the Green & Gold finished the set with four, unanswered points to go up 2-0 in the match.

After dropping the third set, Saint Leo finished off Southern Arkansas in the fourth set 25-19, fueled by a late 7-1 run, that gave the Lions its second win of the season.

UMSL 3, Saint Leo 1
The Lions began the match with a 4-1 lead before the Tritons (3-1) went on a 13-3 run that put UMSL ahead 14-7.  After both sides exchanged two points apiece, UMSL finished the set on a 9-2 run to take the first frame.

Saint Leo had a better showing in the second frame, posting .324 hitting percentage with 15 kills en route to a 25-22 win that tied the match.

UMSL had a harsh response in the third set, jumping out to an 8-0 lead before the Lions registered its first score of the frame.  Later in the set, back-to-back kills from Freshman Brooke Kulik brought the score to 15-6 in favor of the Tritons before UMSL completed the frame with a 10-1 run.

Set Four saw the Tritons begin with an 8-3 lead before the Green & Gold tied the game with five, straight points.  In the end, however, career days from UMSL powered the hosts to a 25-16 win in the fourth set and a 3-1 match win.

Saint Leo is back on the court September 2n d as the Lions travel to Lee University for the Lee Invitational.  The Green & Gold will begin play against Erskine, with the match set to begin at 11 a.m.
