SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball's season came to an abrupt end on Sunday afternoon after their second straight came was concluded, once again, in two days. The Lee Flames eliminated the Lions in game five of the NCAA South Regional Tournament, 9-5.
The Lions and Flames began on Saturday evening and much like the first matchup between the two ballclubs on Thursday, Lee jumped on Saint Leo early to take a 3-0 lead. In the second inning, they used two RBI doubles to go up three runs on the Lions, putting pressure on the Green and Gold.
But then in the third, Saint Leo responded via the red hot
Giuseppe Arcuri. After a
Mike Wyman single, Arcuri hit his second home run of the postseason, a two-run shot to left to pull the Lions to within a run. However, that deficit was short lived as the Flames used errors and fielding miscues committed by the Lions to their advantage for a four-run fourth inning. Highlighted by a RBI triple, Lee went up 7-2 after the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, it was Arcuri again who gave Saint Leo hope. A two-out, two run single to left gave him four RBI's in the game, pulling Saint Leo to within three runs, 7-4.
Once the game got to the top of the seventh, weather invaded St. Leo, Florida and forced the Lions and Flames into a weather delay that lasted until Sunday afternoon. After the restart, Lee extended their lead with a two-run top of the eighth, making their lead 9-5. They closed it out in the bottom of the ninth.
Saint Leo ends their season with a 36-17 record overall.
