Box Score SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball dropped a tough game to Nova Southeastern on Friday night, 4-3, to open their three-game series.
Nova Southeastern got on the board first in the first inning after a one-out double and RBI single to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. They would then add on in the second inning with two outs, going up 2-0 on a sac-fly to center.
But back came with the Lions with runs in the third and fourth innings. In the third,
Tyler Trovinger led the inning off with a double and then came around to score after
Yazael Nunez bunted him over and
Buck Anderson hit a sac-fly to left. The Lions then tied the ballgame in the fourth on
Bobby Sparling's 15th home run of the season, a solo shot to deep left, knotting the game at two apiece.
Nova Southeastern slowly came back with two runs in the seventh inning. A pair of RBI doubles gave the Sharks a two run lead at 4-2.
The Lions had chances throughout the night to make something happen offensively, but were unable to cash in. In the bottom of the fifth, the Lions got the first two men on with nobody out, but were then retired in order. And then in the bottom of the eighth, Saint Leo got the tying run on first base, but the Sharks got out of the jam. They did rally in the bottom of the ninth on a RBI single from Trovinger to cut the lead to one, but their comeback fell just short.
Saint Leo falls to 21-12 on the season and 8-8 in the Sunshine State Conference. The Lions and Sharks will meet again on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1:00.
