SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball walked-off once again on Sunday afternoon thanks to
Bobby Sparling's solo shot to right field in the bottom of the ninth, lifting Saint Leo over Mars Hill, 6-5. Saint Leo takes the four-game series 3-1.
The Lions got behind early in the game to a 5-1 deficit after Mars Hill took a 1-0 lead in the second and added four more in the third inning. Mars Hill's lead was able to expand out to five when Zach Weaver roped a three-run home run to right-center that made it a 5-1 ballgame.
Saint Leo then put together a mini rally in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and second,
Adrien Roa cut into the lead with a momentum building RBI single that scored
Sam Crail. The Lions then drew back-to-back walks, the first from
Peyton Meredith and the second from
Yazael Nunez, to score their third run and make it a 5-3 ballgame.
Saint Leo then was able to tie the ballgame in the eighth when
Yazael Nunez roped an RBI double down the left field line to score Arcuri and Trovinger.
The comeback was complete in the bottom of the ninth when
Bobby Sparling took Mars Hill's reliever Tristan Camp deep over the wall in right field to walk it off for the second time this series.
Saint Leo starter
Luke Pappas went 2.1 innings of work giving up five runs on four hits.
Pat Gallagher came on and gave Coach O'Dette 2.2 innings of relief work, keeping Mars Hill off the board allowing just one hit, striking out three. And then
Devin Blair and
Jestin Jones closed it out to keep Saint Leo in it, both pitching two innings of no-hit baseball. Jones earned the win after striking out four Mars Hill batters.
Saint Leo now moves to 3-1 on the season before going on the road for 11 straight road games. Their first road trip will be on Tuesday night for a non-conference showdown with SSC rival Rollins at 5:00.
