Box Score Boca Raton, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball mustered up 12 hits against the Fighting Knights at Lynn on Saturday in game one, but came up just short of completing the comeback, 7-6.
Lynn created separation early in the first inning with three runs to open up their lead. Two RBI doubles and a single against starter
Jared Beck put the Knights on the board first. The lead then grew to 6-0 for Lynn after four innings after the Knights had a two-run home run in the bottom of the third and a run on a wild pitch extended the lead on the Lions.
Saint Leo got back in the game in the top of the fifth once
Paul Coumoulos got the Lions on the board with his first home run of the season, a solo shot to right to cut into the lead, 6-1.
Bobby Sparling then used his hot bat to line a single to left to bring home
Yazael Nunez and decrease the Lynn lead to four runs, 6-2.
After the Knights got a run back in the sixth, Saint Leo put together a three-run eighth inning.
Adrien Roa got the inning started with a single to right, and then
Tyler Trovinger was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with two outs. Eddie Nieman brought home Roa on a RBI single to center to cut the lead to 7-3. Coumoulos tallied his second RBI of the day on a single to center to score Trovinger. Then Nunez joined in the fun on another RBI single to center scoring Nieman to bring the Lions to within two runs, 7-5.
In the top of the ninth, Eddie Nieman grabbed another RBI on the day with a sac-fly that scored
Zach Benson to bring the Lions to within one run, 7-6, but the Knights would hold steady and stop the Saint Leo rally to secure the win.
Saint Leo dropped to 7-6 on the season and 1-3 in the SSC. The Lions and Knights are back in action for game two on Saturday in Boca Raton, Florida.
