INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Saint Leo men's tennis team upset the hosts of the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II Indoor Tennis Championships on Friday. The Lions pulled out a 4-3 victory over the University of Indianapolis.
Brad Eidenmuller clinched the match for the Green and Gold, overcoming a three-set sixth singles battle. The sweet indoor victory improved the Lions' overall record to 3-1. It also punched a ticket to meet Columbus State in round two on Saturday, Feb 19 at 5:30 p.m.
The doubles point perfectly foreshadowed what was about to be a tight battle between the Lions and Greyhounds. Third doubles duo Nicolas and
Luis Iriarte won 6-4 followed by a long 7-6 (7-4) first doubles win by
Bruno Faletto and Willem van den Akker.
Iriarte went 2-0 in the opening round, handing the Lions' their second match point in fifth singles; 6-2, 6-0.
Ghali Mensour in the fourth spot pulled out the critical 6-4, 6-3 win to set up sixth singles as center stage.
With the match tied at 3-3, Eidenmuller dropped his first set 4-6. The first-year graduate student rallied in the second to comeback 7-5. He wasted no more time in the third set, cruising to a 6-2 win to lift Saint Leo over Indianapolis.
