Lions run win streak to four with win over Newberry

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Saint Leo Softball swept the weekend at the Old Coast Classic on Sunday, running their win streak to four in a row with a 6-3 win over Newberry at Flagler.

The Lions got a strong performance yet again from Rachel Bean, who earned her second win of the season. The junior from Colorado pitched her second complete-game in back-to-back days, giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out five while walking five.

For the offense, Emily Pilon had a career-day with her first multi-home run game in her time wearing the Green and Gold. Pilon first hit a two-out solo home run to left in the first inning to give Saint Leo a 2-0 lead. Then in the fifth inning, Pilon took Newberry deep again with two outs on a 1-0 pitch for a solo home run giving the Lions a 5-2 lead.

Saint Leo took the lead for good in the second inning. After Bayley Williams singled and Alexandra Hare drew a walk, Jordyn Wolfe delivered a RBI single to left to score Williams and give the Lions a 3-2 lead. That was followed by a Ciara Ford sacrifice fly to left that brought in Hare and make it 4-2 Lions.

Wolfe delivered her second RBI of the game on a RBI single that scored Williams for the second time of the day. The Louisville transfer now is hitting .318 on the year with four RBI's with a .364 slugging percentage. Pilon, Wolfe, and Williams all finished 2-for-3 against Newberry.

The Lions now move to 6-2 on the season before coming home for the first time season this coming Friday. Saint Leo Softball will celebrate their home opener at University Softball Stadium on Friday, February 18 with a 7:00 first pitch against SSC rival Florida Southern. The Lions and Mocs will play a three-game series between Friday night and Saturday.
