SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team improved to an impressive 5-0 on the season defeating #9 Bentley University. The Lions have now defeated two nationally ranked teams to start the 2022-23 season and are off to one of their hottest starts in years.
Similar to earlier games this season, the Lions were able to jump out to an early lead and command the rest of the game. Saint Leo attacked the visiting Falcons in the paint Sunday afternoon recording 42 of their 95 points in the paint.
Amanda Ulrich was massive for the Lions' offense leading the team with a team high 33 points (12-for-19 from the field).
Alex Button was right behind her tallying 23 points. Together the Lions shot 7-for-16 (43.8%) from three-point range. The Lions collected 20 points off fouls and shot a combined 83.3% (20-for-24).
Kiki McIntyre totaled 18 points and led the Lions with three offensive boards. Button and McIntyre led Saint Leo grabbing 14 (seven each) of the Lions 38 rebounds.
Alayna Harris and Button both led the Green & Gold with two blocks each.
#9 Bentley kicked off the game with a 4-0 run. The Lions answered back drawing an early Falcons foul. McIntyre would give the Lions the lead, scoring off a turnover to make the score 11-9 and what would ultimately be the only lead change of the entire game. The Lions would hold the lead for a total of 35:18 minutes.
The third quarter would call for several Saint Leo game-highs. The Lions impressively shot for their highest field goal percentage in the third quarter, attempting 18 shots from the field recording a 72.2% (13-for-18). The Lions scored their highest total points in a quarter during the third quarter, tallying 30 points.
Saint Leo jumped out to their biggest lead of the game in the 4
th quarter, extending their lead to 21 with nine minutes to go.
The Lions will travel to Daytona Beach to open conference play against Embry-Riddle University, Wednesday, November 30. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 PM.Â
