SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo Lions opened up their 2022-23 season in the win column after defeating Alabama Huntsville, 68-54 Friday Night.
The Lions had four players record double-digit points against the Chargers this evening.
Alex Button led the charge finishing with a team-high 16 points,
Alayna Harris finished second on the team with 13 points,
Amanda Ulrich had 12 points, and
Taydra Simpson finished the night with 10 points.
The first quarter opened up with UAH jumping out to a quick one-point lead which would be the only lead they would posses throughout the game. Saint Leo would quickly respond, stealing the early lead from the Chargers. The Lions would not surrender the lead in the first quarter as they soared past the Chargers, 12-8.Â
The Lions would come out even stronger in the second half, shooting for their best three-point percentage of the night in the third quarter at 45.45%. Burton and Simpson hit quick back-to-back three pointers to kickstart the Lions offense in the third quarter. Both Teams would trade points throughout the quarter, but the Lions built a strong foundational lead to command the third quarter, 51-37.
Saint Leo would close out the fourth quarter with their best field goal percentage of the night at 6-11 for a 54.55%. The Lions would find themselves at the line for most of the fourth quarter but didn't sweat it as they would coast to a victory defeating the Chargers 68-54.
The Lions took advantage at the line throughout the game going 20-22 for a 90.9%. The Saint Leo bench contributed greatly to the offense, scoring 17 points.
Saint Leo will look to improve to 2-0 on the season when they face Lee University who is also coming off a win today. Lee opened up the tournament defeating Florida Southern College, 97-79.
The Lions return to action Saturday afternoon to close out the Hilton Garden Inn Tampa-Wesley Chapel Classic against Lee University. Tip off is at 3:30 P.M.
