SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University Men's basketball team travels to Huntsville, Ala. this weekend to tip off its 2022-23 season against host #21 Alabama-Huntsville and Montevallo in UAH's annual Bill Penney Classic.
The Lions head into the weekend on a high note, nearly pulling off a big, Division I win against Stetson in exhibition play in its previous outing. The Green & Gold hit more than 37% of its shots from the field. Defensively, Saint Leo guarded well from the floor to only allow 35% of shots.
vs. #21 UAH (11/11)
On Day One, Saint Leo will face #21 Alabama-Huntsville. The Chargers (1-1) are set to begin its home opener after coming away with an upset 83-81 thriller over #6 Lincoln Memorial at Florida Southern's SCB Hall of Fame Classic. In both of Alabama-Huntsville's barn burners, the Chargers' scoring offense shot nearly 49% from the floor and 38% from long range.
UAH has three players that currently average over 10 points a contest. Chaney Johnson heads into the weekend leading the Blue & White in scoring and boarding.
vs. Montevallo (11/12)
After the Chargers, the Lions will take on the University of Montevallo. Like Saint Leo, the Falcons will also open its season in Huntsville after coming off a few exhibition contests.
The Purple & Yellow return its leading scorer in Braxton Bertolette, while picking up a few key Division II transfers like West Alabama's Te Smith who averaged 13 points in each of UM's exhibition contests. Saint Leo's perimeter defense will be tested by Bertolette, who averaged over 40% from outside the arch.
Friday's tipoff against UAH at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall is slated for 8 p.m. EST, as Saturday's contest vs. Montevallo is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST.
