BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Saint Leo University volleyball team looked to build off its sweeping win against Palm Beach Atlantic before Lynn provided the Lions a reality check Tuesday night, as the Fighting Knights defeated the Green & Gold in three sets at de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Central.
The Lions tallied 35 kills on the night, led by Redshirt Senior
Elizabeth Sandoval with ten, as the Right Side Hitter also picked up two blocks.
The opening set was within reach for Lions as the team cut the deficit to one (14-13) before the Fighting Knights carved an 11-3 run on Saint Leo to cruise its way to a 25-16 first set win.
Déjà vu struck the Green & Gold in Set Two, as the Fighting Knights went on another 11-3 run late after the Lions knotted up the set score 14-14, leading to another comfortable set win for the Blue & White with a 25-16 result.
In the third set, the Lions had a lead as large as five (12-7) before the Blue & White's attack went full force on an 11-1 that included a string of eight points to take an 18-13 lead. Saint Leo chipped away at the deficit, coming to within one of Lynn (21-20) before the Fighting Knights responded with three points to pull within match point. The Green & Gold attempted to keep the match going with three straight points of their own but a final kill from Lynn gave the Fighting Knights the 25-23 set win and the match sweep.
Saint Leo is back home Friday as the Lions host Nova Southeastern. First serve at the Marion Bowman Activities Center is set for 7 p.m.
