SAINT LEO, Fla. – After being on the wrong side of a midweek upset, the Saint Leo University Women's soccer team appeared set to do what no team has done yet in 2022 in defeating #2 Embry-Riddle before an Eagles' header with an unfortunate bounce in the 85th minute foiled Saint Leo's plans in a major upset, drawing with ERAU 1-1 Saturday night at Saint Leo University Soccer Field.
The draw is the first-ever in the overall series between the two teams dating back to 2015.
The Lions (6-3-2, 2-3-1 SSC) recorded 10 shots on the night, with Senior
Alex Collighan owning half of them on the night. Graduate
Maitane Bravo recorded her third-highest saves total of the season, stopping six shots.
After a scoreless first half, it was the Green & Gold that struck first as Collighan booted in her sixth goal of the season from a pass by fellow Senior
Alexia Spencer in the 51st minute.
Embry-Riddle (7-0-4, 2-0-4 SSC) remained unbeaten thanks to a header from Isabelle Navren in that bounced underneath the cross bar and just past pay dirt to register the equalizing score.
"I think overall it was an excellent team performance, especially coming off the poor performance that we put out on Tuesday" said Head Coach
Ged O'Connor. "We're playing a highly-ranked team, a very well-coached team. After a short turnaround, tactically we weren't able to play the way we expected to and performed the way we should. Disappointed to have conceded at home, but now the team has to somewhat enjoy the evening and get ready for next Wednesday."
