SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University volleyball gave #16 Barry quite a run Friday night, but it wasn't enough to avoid a sweep, as the Buccaneers stifled Saint Leo in three sets at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
The Lions began the contest with a slim lead over the Bucs for a majority of the opening set before Barry took its first lead at 16-15. After taking the lead, it was the Red & Black that held a slim lead until the first set was tied 20-20. That would be enough for the Bucs to finish the set with the final five points to take a 25-20 Set One win.
While Set Two began as another closely contested set, the Bucs found its stride after the Lions cut the deficit to 10-8, scoring seven of the next eight points that gave the team a 17-9 lead. The Green & Gold tacked on three more points before Barry posted yet another 7-1 run to reach set point. Saint Leo strung another three points together before Barry closed the door on the second set, sealing a 25-16 win.
Barry's three-point runs were too much for Saint Leo to overcome in the third set, as the Bucs built its largest lead of the set (19-13). That did not stop the Lions from giving their all, responding with four, unanswered points to trim BU's lead to two. Nevertheless, Barry closed out the match on a 6-3 run the gave the Bucs another 25-20 set win and the sweep.
Saint Leo will look to avenge a five-set heartbreaker earlier in the season as Palm Beach Atlantic makes it annual visit to the Bowman Center; first set is slated for 4 p.m.
