SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team earned another tally in the win column Saturday against Florida Tech. The Lions handled the Panthers 78-60 inside the Marion Bowman Center. The sweet victory raised the Green and Gold's overall record to 13-6, 8-3 in the Sunshine State Conference. The conference decision lowered Florida Tech's season mark to 2-14, 0-11 in the SSC.
Amanda Ulrich had another incredible offensive game scoring 29 points, recording her sixth game this season with 20 points or more. Ulrich also led the team off the boards with a game-high nine rebounds. She was helped by
Alex Button with 12 points and
Ayanna Trigg with 11.
Tori Lesko was quieter but extremely effective for the Green and Gold's offense. Lesko tallied nine points, four rebounds, and five sharp assists.
"What a dominant performance from
Amanda Ulrich," expressed head coach
Anthony Crocitto. "Florida Tech came ready to play and shuffle the ball very well but in the end, our defense did not let us down."
"
Alex Button has been rock solid for a couple of games on both ends and I'm very proud of her leadership and commitment as well. Our bench also stepped up once again and earned rebounds and points. Plus, it was really nice to have
Tori Lesko back in the lineup."
As a team, Saint Leo outscored the Florida Tech with a 45.9-percent field goal percentage to the visitor's 33.9-percent from the hardwood. The Lions also topped the Panthers with 43 rebounds to 34.
Saint Leo never allowed Florida Tech to be comfortable inside the Bowman Center. The Lions overwhelmed the Panthers 22-11 after the first quarter. Florida Tech attempted to chip away at the gap in the second and third quarters. Their efforts would be met by a Saint Leo team who finished the task at hand by outscoring Florida Tech 22-16 in the fourth.
"Coming off a very tough loss, it was important to get this one and it was important to get this one the right way. While we have some growing to do, I'm confident we will only get stronger," concluded Crocitto.
The Lions will return home for their next game on Wednesday, Jan 26 at 5:30 p.m. Saint Leo is set to host the Eckerd College Tritons for the midweek SSC showdown.
