Lions Ledger: Packed Home Weekend Ahead for Lions Athletics

  • Saint Leo continues the hunt for its first win. The Lions look to rebound from a pair of losses following their trip to Alabama. The Green and Gold fell 4-1 at Montevallo and 1-0 in a tight match at West Alabama.
  • Mauro Diaz tallied his first goal of the season against the Falcons of Montevallo on Friday. The sophomore forward knocked one in during the 84th minute.
  • Diaz and Josef Hefele have each netted goals for Saint Leo.
  • Goalkeepers Jackson Eckley and Riccardo Zarri have each earned a pair of starts in the net. Zarri enters the week with a 0-2 record after facing 15 shots and earning three saves. Eckley holds a 0-1-1 mark after seeing 25 shots and earning five stops.
  • Rollins is coming off a 3-2 win against Spring Hill College on Sunday. Tars' Georgios Koliniatis posted a hattrick to muscle past SHC.
  • Koliniatis leads the Tars' offense with four goals followed by Mason Lamb and Jari Polm with a goal apiece. Koliniatis pulled in the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Offensive Player of the Week honors following his five-goal week.
  • Goalkeeper Maximillian Obermeier has started all four games where he faced 35 shots, collected 13 saves.
  • HISTORY: The Lions and Tars last met on Oct. 9, 2019 at Cahall Sandsupr Field. Saint Leo tallied a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory in 101 minutes of action.
  • Embry-Riddle will travel to Stetson on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff before heading to Saint Leo on Saturday for the Sunshine State Conference opener.
  • The Eagles suffered a pair of losses from Flagler and Georgia Southwestern State last week.
  • Teddy West leads the offense with two goals followed by Sandro Henning, Jake Joyce, and Amit Libgot with a goal apiece.
  • Thomas Loesel holds a 1-2 goalkeeper record. Loesel has faced 33 shots in which he collected 11 saves.
  • HISTORY: The program's last met on Sept. 21, 2019 in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Eagles escaped the Lions in a low-scoring 1-0 decision, with the lone goal coming in the opening minute of action.
  • PROMO: Saturday's game under the lights is the Lions' first Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) first Athletes For Athletes event of the year.

  • Saint Leo captured its first victory on Sunday over Texas A&M International. Paula Martinez Miranda's second take off a corner by Nina Mueller in the 84th minute captured the first 'W' after the return of head coach Ged O'Connor.
  • Martinez, Bella Arato, and Alyssa Abernot have each contributed a goal.
  • Goalkeeper Mitane Bravo was named Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Defensive Player of the Week. The redshirt senior from Basauri, Spain earned a .917 save percentage against No. 9 West Florida and Texas A&M International. Bravo faced 21 shots and six corner kicks in which she posted 11 saves.
  • No. 7 University of Colorado at Colorado Springs earned back-to-back wins last week over No. 2 Dallas Baptist and Texas A&M – Commerce. The Mountain Lions put together six goals over the week for a season tally of 12.
  • Tarah Patterson has registered seven points from a pair of goals and three assists while Makayla Merlo has found the back of the three times.
  • Chloe DeShazer has earned three starts in which she protected the Mountain Lions' net for 297 minutes. DeShazer has faced 28 shots and earned five saves. Alexis Walker earned the most recent start in goal. Walker faced 10 shots by Texas A&M – Commerce, in which she earned a pair of saves.
  • HISTORY: Friday marks the first historic meeting between the two programs.
  • Embry-Riddle is set to host Saint Leo to open Sunshine State Conference competition for the 2021 season. The conference opener follows the Eagles trip to Valdosta, Ga. on Friday Sept. 17.
  • The Eagles rolled over Queens University of Charlotte, 4-0, and Davenport, 5-0 for their pair of wins. Maire Myhrvold Seim and Isabelle Navren have each netted a pair for Embry-Riddle. The Eagles offense currently boasts eight different goal scorers.
  • Oona Jokinen has earned the three starts in the cage. Jokinen has faced 25 shots in which she earned seven stops.
  • HISTORY: Saint Leo upset Embry-Riddle last meeting the Eagles on Nov. 5, 2019 at the Saint Leo Soccer Field. Nina Mueller netted the game-winner in the 34th minute.
  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 4-4, 0-0 SSC | Florida Southern 3-1, 0-0 SSC | No. 9 Tampa 6-1, 0-0 SSC
  • Saint Leo went 3-1 this past weekend at the VSU Fall Tournament with wins over UNC Pembroke (3-0), Albany State (3-0) and Valdosta State (3-1). Junior transfer Elizabeth Sandoval had a breakout performance in the final match of the weekend versus Valdosta State as she tallied a Saint Leo career-high 20 kills on just 38 swings.
  • Senior Brooke Turner has moved into the lead on the team for kills (73) and kills per set (3.04) while fellow senior Ashley Quero sits in second with 66 kills and a 2.44 kills per set average. Senior Anna Garrett took over the setting role over the weekend and had four solid performances and now is averaging 7.14 assists per set after averaging over nine a set this past weekend.
  • Senior libero Payton Bellano is averaging 4.00 digs per set and recently surpassed the 1,000 career digs milestone and is moving up the record book. Sophomore Margaret Schirm continues to be the Lions top blocker with 15 total blocks, averaging 0.56 per set.
  • Florida Southern opened its 2021 campaign this past weekend at the Rollins Invitational after missing their scheduled appearance in the Shark Invitational. The Mocs went 3-1 on the weekend with victories over Newberry (3-2), West Georgia (3-1) and Georgia College (3-0). Their lone loss was a 3-0 setback to Anderson to close out the weekend.
  • Senior Erica Ronda leads the Mocs attack with 3.20 kills per set, over one kill per set more than her closest teammate. Junior libero Beatrice Formilan leads the Sunshine State Conference and ranks third in all of NCAA Division II in digs per set at 6.40. Senior Tierra Porter has been the top block-getter with eight total through four matches.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern won the first 60 match-ups between the programs dating from 1976 until 2008. The series has been much closer since 2008 as the Lions have gone 12-15 against Florida Southern in that span including winning three of the last four matches.
  • No. 9 Tampa opened the season by hosting the Tampa Classic in which the Spartans went 3-1 with a 3-2 loss to No. 17 Northwest Missouri State. The Spartans defeated Illinois Springfield (3-0), Augustana (3-2) and Ashland (3-0). The Spartans then traveled to New York for a trio of matches against Molloy (3-0), Adelphi (3-1) and Nyack (3-0).
  • Senior Katie McKiel leads the Spartan attack with 3.04 kills per set. She is flanked by freshman Kalli Cors and senior Sorrel Houghton who are averaging 2.61 and 2.41 kills per set, respectively. Senior libero Claudia Rivera is averaging a team-best 3.91 digs per set while sophomore Mackenzie Dufresne has a team best 15 blocks while averaging 0.94 per set.
  • HISTORY: Saint Leo and Tampa meet for the 96th time on the volleyball court Saturday. The Spartans hold a commanding 89-6 record in the all-time series but five of the Lions' six wins have come in the last 11 matches against the Spartans. The Spartans are currently riding a three-match winning streak in the series dating back to 2019.
