SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's soccer team conceded a 1-0 decision to ninth-ranked West Florida in the Lions' home opener on Friday. An early penalty kick would be enough for the Argonauts to escape the Lions in the regional matchup.  The low-scoring decision moved Saint Leo's overall record to 0-2-1 while West Florida's record lifted to 3-0.
Â
The Lions tested the Argonauts keeper with eight shots, paced by
Bella Arato with two dangerous shots. In the ninth minute, Arato bulldozed through the midfield and shot a knuckleball to the top center of the Argonauts' cage. Her second shot connected with a corner but was cut short by a defender in the lower-left corner of the net. Offensive efforts were helped by
Raylyn Straubmuller, who also tallied a pair of shots.
Goalkeeper
Maitane Bravo made her first appearance as a Lion registering her first start of the season. Â The graduate student recorded six saves while facing 11 shots.
Â
The Lions return to the Saint Leo Soccer Field quickly, hosting the Texas A&M International Dustdevils for the first time in program history on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 11:30 a.m.
