#5-Seed Men’s Tennis Blanks #4-Seed Delta State in Preliminary Upset

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The fifth-seeded Saint Leo men's tennis team survived the NCAA Division II South Regional Preliminary round by upsetting fourth-seeded Delta State 4-0 on Friday. The Lions will advance to the regional semifinals on Saturday, May 8 at 11:00 a.m. (ET). Saint Leo (9-2) will face Sunshine State Conference foe, first-seeded Barry (8-0).

The Green and Gold's double teams have been exceptional all season and today was no different. The Lions claimed the point with wins from second flight duo Aurel Ciocanu and Willem Van Den Akker, who are ranked 15th together and third flight team, Bruno Faletto and Nicolas Bacella. Both doubles teams handed in 6-1 decisions.

Christopher Traut took care of business in the fifth singles flight. The sophomore from Eichenau, Germany cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory for the Lions second point of the match. Ciocanu, who is ranked 21st, topped Leo De Sousa in a tiebreaker; 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). Ciocanu's work propelled Saint Leo 3-0 over the Statesmen of Delta State.

Keeping Our Lions Healthy & Safe
Saint Leo University Athletics is keeping our student-athletes healthy and safe by following a number of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This includes having student-athletes tested or screened on a regular basis, traveling in smaller groups, limiting the number of fans in attendance, avoiding overnight trips, and wearing masks when not competing. These safety standards meet those set by the NCAA Division II and the Sunshine State Conference President's Council. At Saint Leo University, the COVID-19 Incident Command Team also reviews the teams' safety protocol and monitors adherence on a regular basis.
