Kelly Sets Career Doubles Record, Lions Fall in Doubleheader to Panthers Thursday

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo softball's fifth-year standout, Kacie Kelly became the programs' career doubles record holder after knocking her 51st career double in the doubleheader against Florida Tech Thursday at University Softball Stadium.

Kelly, a Jacksonville, Fla. native, knocked her 51st career double in the fourth inning of game two Thursday after a long-awaited breakthrough since March 25th when she tied the record. For her career, which involves a shortened 2020 CoVID19 season, Kelly opened up her doubles march with back-to-back seasons with 15 before 10 doubles in her junior season to finish at 40, 10 off the pace. Kelly inched closer in 2020 with six before tying and breaking it with five for far this season.

The record stood since 2012 when Brittany Yates moved atop the leader board when she surpassed the Saint Leo Athletics Hall of Famer, class of 2007, Desiree Croteau's 48 from 2001.

In the conference-non-conference doubleheader, Saint Leo shifted to 13-8, 10-6 in the Sunshine State Conference while Florida Tech climbed to 11-8, 8-6 SSC after the 2-1 (eight innings) and 4-0 Panthers decisions.

Kacie Kelly, Alexandra Hare, and Alyssa Perez each tallied two hits on the day with Alli Jaquith, Morgan Shannon, and Madi Mott each picking up one hit on the night. Hare matched Kelly with a single and a double on the night.

Mott took the extra-inning loss in game one but pitched a gem that just didn't fall in the favor of the Green and Gold. The Gladstone, Ore. Native went the full eight innings allowing just two runs while fanning 11 batters on the way.

Saint Leo scored first in game one as Hare drove in Alexis Miniet in the second inning on a sacrifice fly to left field. The Lions left three runners on base as the inning came to a close. After Florida Tech tied it 1-1 in the fourth, the two teams battled it out for another four innings, each leaving runners on the base path. In the bottom of the eighth, down 2-1, Saint Leo saw a one-out single to center field from freshman Alyssa Perez. Two quick flyouts ended the chance of tying or possibly walking it off, as the Panthers took game one 1-0.

Game two had an early start to the scoring as Florida Tech went up 3-0 quickly. The Lions battled but couldn't push across a run while Florida Tech scored another in the sixth. Saint Leo stranded three runners on base including Kacie Kelly who reached the record-breaking double in the fourth. Saint Leo stranded its leadoff batter in the seventh as the Green and Gold will look to the next doubleheader against the Crimson and Gray.
