TAMPA, Fla. – Four days later, the Saint Leo men's basketball team got revenge on rival-Tampa with a 67-54 road win Saturday afternoon inside the Bob Martinez Center.Â
Â
After the original scheduled game at Florida Tech got postponed, the two teams, found themselves looking to play for the second time in the week. The teams have each won on the road and both programs are 1-1 on the year. Saint Leo holds the scoring advantage 142-133.Â
"Nice win on the road this afternoon." Head Coach
Lance Randall stated. "Another big game from Frank. He had some amazing rebounds and got the game opened up with a couple of pick sixes. Cantia dominated the glass in stretches and moved and finished well. Our bench gave us a some great minutes. Chase was rock solid and steadied the ship for us and Gintaras hit a couple big 3's to go with some big steals. I thought Luke and Erik's length bothered Tampa. Erik gave us a little bounce on O as well in that 2
nd half.
Randall continued, "We turned it over way too much and most were just sloppy play that was on us. We missed some opportunities to get some more free throws up at the end of the first half by getting loose with the ball and a couple of questionable shots. Loved the way we responded today. Great team effort on the road."
Â
Leading the way for the Lions was freshman
Cantia Rahming and senior transfer
Frank Webb Jr. who each notched a double-double. It was the second of the season for Webb, where he scored 17 points and hauled in 10 rebounds while Rahming paced the team in scoring with 19 points and grabbed a game-high 13 boards off the glass.
Â
Gintaras Bartaskas provided a spark off the bench, scoring 12 points for the Lions, including back-to-back threes in the early minutes of the second half, which eventually propelled the Green and Gold to a double-digit win.
Saint Leo won the rebounding battle, 39-28, where the Green and Gold shot 48-percent from the field. Bench points proved to be the difference maker as the Lions dropped 23 to the Spartans eight.Â
Â
Rusty Moorer got things going with the first points of the game, followed by seven close minutes of action in the Bob Martinez Center. The game saw three ties in the opening minutes before
Cantia Rahming scored his first points of the day on an old-fashioned three-point play, layup and one with 13:15 to play, giving the Green and Gold a 10-7 lead. A quick burst of the Lions offense saw a 10-point gap on the board, 20-10 after strong defense caused four Spartan turnovers.
Chase Villers tallied a block and the ball found
Frank Webb Jr. who laid it in for the 20
th point of the game for the Green and Gold.
Â
Heading down to the final six minutes of the opening half, Villers picked the passing lane and turned it into a Rahming three-point play, layup and free throw to make it 29-16. Another turnover forced on defense saw Rahming finish at the other end once again to make it the largest lead of the first half, 31-16. Tampa would battle to cut the lead to five points, 36-31 with 1:16 to play, but the Lions would go into the half leading 38-31.
Â
In the first half, the Lions shot 50-percent from the field while winning the rebounding battle, 19-13. Rahming paced the team with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including a 3-for-3 mark from the free throw line, while adding seven rebounds in 15 minutes of action.
Â
A quick 8-2 run by the Lions opened the half that was highlighted by back-to-back threes from
Gintaras Bartaskas, forcing a quick timeout by the Spartans. Heading to the first media timeout, Saint Leo would sit ahead by 11, 46-35, before outscoring Tampa 11-6 to extend the game to its largest lead, 57-41, capped by Webb's three pointer.
Â
Tampa would chip away at the deficit and cut it to just single digits, 61-52 on a steal, before
Rusty Moorer extended it back to double-digits with 2:34 remaining in the contest with a left handed finish at the rim. After a pair of free throws cut it back to nine, the Lions would see Webb hit a three with one-second on the shot clock to extend it to 12 points, 66-54 with just over a minute to play. As Tampa was driving with 40-seconds on the clock,
Wade Coomer took the charge to force the ball back into the Green and Gold's hands. With 30-ticks on the clock,
Grant Disken sank a free throw to bring the game to its final score, 67-54.
Â
Saint Leo is slated to host Florida Southern Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
