SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo fell 97-88 to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish New Year's Eve inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center. During the Sunshine State Conference matchup, Saint Leo missed the presence of two starting double-figure scorers due to health and safety protocols. The loss moved the Green and Gold's record to 5-6 overall, 1-3 in the SSC while PBA improved to a season mark of 5-8, 3-2 in the conference.
Frank Webb Jr. had another tremendous game on the scoreboard recording 21 points going 9-for-16 from the field (.562). The senior guard also compiled five steals, five assists, and three rebounds. He was joined by three other Lions scoring double digits in
Francis Sio (18),
Cantia Rahming (15), and
Luke Haasl (12). Both Rahming and Haasl earned five rebounds to lead the Lions off the boards.
A nine-point run by the Sailfish in the middle of the first half handed the Lions a double-digit deficit at 26-13, which would prove too much for the Green and Gold to climb out of for the remainder of the game. Saint Leo cut the gap to five (32-37) with five minutes to go in the first off a good jumper by Webb Jr. and a bucket under the basket by Hassl. Despite the efforts, PBA would maintain the lead and go into the halftime break ahead by 10 at 47-37.
In the second half, Saint cut PBA's lead to six points six different times but the Sailfish outlasted any efforts the Lions strung together. The Lions ended the game with four points off a
Robert Fry II jumper and layup by Haasl.
Up next, Saint Leo will turn around quickly to host Barry, who is ranked 15
th by the NABC Coaches poll as of Dec. 26, 2021. The Sunshine State Conference tip-off is set for Sunday, January 2, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. inside the Bowman Center.
