SAINT LEO, Fla. - A strong second half led Saint Leo men's basketball past Montevallo Saturday afternoon to close out the two program's play in the Gulf South Conference vs Sunshine State Conference Challenge inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
The Lions saw
Luke Haasl turn in a career night ahead of
Frank Webb Jr.'s second straight stat-crazy night. Hassl dropped a game-high 23 points while hauling in eight boards to lead the Lions in 29:53 minutes of action. After a near quadruple double Friday night and again Saturday, Webb posted a double-double against the Falcons with 11 points and 10 assists. The Baltimore, Md. native tallied seven steals and nine rebounds to fall just shy of another stellar feat on the court.
Jared Coomer added a double-double as well with 14 points and 13 rebounds while
Grant Disken notched 13 points.
Montevallo was led by James McNeil with 13 points while Jason King and Braxton Bertolette added 11 and 10, respectively.
Both teams had an early lead in the first eight minutes of play before playing to a 10-10 tie at the 11:58 mark. The Falcons went into halftime with an eight point advantage after leading for a majority of the first half.
Luke Haasl paced the team at the break with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the court.
A strong halftime message from Coach
Lance Randall saw the Lions start clicking to open the second half. The Green and Gold cut it to just one, 37-36, with a quick 7-0 run. Saint Leo tied things up at 40 apiece on a
Frank Webb Jr. layup. Montevallo reversed the run and used a 7-0 run to claim a 47-40 advantage before yet again the Green and Gold came soaring back.
Cantia Rahming's two free throws closed the gap to one, 47-46, before
Luke Haasl had a tip-in to take the lead. From there, with the crowd and bench energy, Saint Leo roared out to a big lead, claiming to a 16 point lead with under five minutes to play. The Lions would hold on for a double-digit lead, not letting the Falcons within nine over the final four minutes of action.
Saint Leo will look to Tuesday night when the Green and Gold hosts Savannah State at 7 p.m. inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
