FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Saint Leo Lions and Nova Southeastern dished out eight goals in the Sunshine State Conference men's soccer match-up Saturday night. Despite the offensive explosion, neither team was able to clinch the match resulting in a 4-4 overtime draw.
Saint Leo (3-9-3, 1-5-2 SSC) was paced by
Miguel Fernandez with a pair of goals off six shots. The Spanish forward netted the team's first goal, assisted by
Lucas Mastroguiseppe and third of the night, assisted by
Mauro Diaz. The Green and Gold also celebrated goals by Noah Knifte, assisted by
Josef Hefele and
Harrison Taylor, assisted by
Branddon Silva Ortiz.
The Lions found the back of the net first as Fernandez celebrated his fourth of the season in the 18
th minute. Nova Southeastern (8-3-2, 4-3-1 SSC) answered in 27
th minute for the first of four ties. Kvifte's goal in the 43
rd minute lifted the Lions 2-1, but the Sharks registered two quick goals before the halftime break.
Down by one (3-2) in the second half, Fernandez had some fun again to level the game at three. Australian defender,
Harrison Taylor soon reclaimed the lead for Saint Leo with 33 minutes remaining in regulation.
The Lions nearly fended off the Sharks but in the last minute of regulation, the game was tied up again and ultimately for good.
In the midst of the long battle, starting goalkeeper
Riccardo Zarri earned a save in 45 minutes of work while
Joao Kozlowski finished up work in the cage for the remaining 65 minutes, in which he earned a pair of stops.
Saint Leo returns home on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 7:00 p.m. to host the Lynn Fighting Knights.
