MELBOURNE, Fla. – Redshirt senior
Maitane Bravo made a Saint Leo career-high 11 saves Saturday night in Melbourne to preserve a 0-0 tie for the Saint Leo women's soccer team versus Florida Tech in Sunshine State Conference play. The Basauri, Spain native made a pair of diving saves over the final three minutes as the Lions fought off a furious Panther attack in the final ticks of the clock.
The Lions were able to get off nine shots on the night but none were able to find the frame as the defense kept the Panthers out of the net despite 23 shots with 11 on frame. Seniors
Kennedy Messina and
Paula Martinez Miranda each tallied a team-high two shots in the match while five others each had one.
The dynamic of the match changed late in the second overtime period as the Lions had a player sent off after a second yellow card which put the Green and Gold squad down to 10 members on the field. The Panthers looked to take advantage of the send-off and began attacking the net looking for the game-winner. Bravo made a diving save to her left and then just over two minutes later had to dive back to her right to save a free kick attempt which solidified the shutout.
The shutout is the third of the season for the Lions and second for Bravo. The Lions improved to 2-8-2 overall and 1-4-1 in Sunshine State Conference action while the Panthers moved to 5-2-4 on the year and 1-2-3 in league action.
The Lions return to action this Wednesday, Oct. 20 as Saint Leo hosts Tampa at 7 p.m. The match will be an Athletes for Athletes event.
