Lions Ledger: Volleyball Travels to Nationally-Ranked Tampa Tuesday

  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 6-10, 2-6 SSC | Tampa 13-2, 7-1 SSC
  • Saint Leo once again split a pair of matches last weekend taking down Rollins on the road 3-1 before falling at Embry-Riddle 3-0. The Lions will close out their five-match road swing Tuesday night at nationally-ranked Tampa at 7 p.m.
  • Senior Ashley Quero continues to lead the team in kills this season despite not appearing in the last two matches. Junior Madi Certain had a breakout performance in her absence averaging 5.2 kills per set over the last two matches including posting a career-best 23 kills in the win over Rollins. Senior Payton Bellano is averaging 3.87 digs per set from her libero position while senior Anna Garrett has been running the offense efficiently recently and is averaging 6.98 assists per set including 9.4 over the last two matches.
  • Quero, Bellano and Garrett are inching up the career charts at Saint Leo. Quero currently ranks fourth in the career record book at Saint Leo in kills with 1,146. Quero needs just 53 more kills to tie for third all-time with Kristy Johnson (1996-99). Bellano currently sits just outside the top-six in career digs at Saint Leo with 1,145, She needs 93 more digs to move into sixth all-time and tie Yaidimar Santiago (2013-14). Garrett who has been splitting time with junior Skylar Singleton at setter has moved into second all-time in assists with 3,514. She still sits 1,859 behind record holder Michelle Nogueras' (2006-09) 5,373 career assists.
  • Tampa suffered just its second loss of the season this past Friday as nationally-ranked Nova Southeastern downed the Spartans 3-1 in Tampa. The Spartans only other loss prior to Friday's setback was a 3-2 defeat at the hands of national-ranked Northwest Missouri State.
  • Senior Katie McKiel is averaging a team-best 3.12 kills per set for the Spartans while two others sit above 2.3 kills per set. The Spartans rely on a two-setter system while senior Claudia Rivera serves as the libero and is digging up 4.43 balls per set. Six Spartans have 20 or more blocks on the season as the team is out-blocking their opponents 123-97.
  • HISTORY: Saint Leo and Tampa meet for the 97th time on the volleyball court Tuesday. The Spartans hold a commanding 90-6 record in the all-time series but five of the Lions' six wins have come in the last 12 matches against the Spartans. The Spartans are currently riding a four-match winning streak in the series dating back to 2019.
