CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Saint Leo baseball team had to wait an extra 24 hours to get on the field in Cleveland, Tenn. due to a snow storm that breezed through the area. Battling low temperatures, the pitchers took over in game one as the Lee University Flames won 2-1. Game two saw a mid-game offensive spurt for the Flames which led to a 5-1 decision in the home team's favor.
Â
The Lions entered the contest 0-3 on the season but had won four-straight over the Flames over the past two seasons. Lee had opened the year 3-1 and were carrying the momentum Sunday as they improved to 5-1 on the year and saw the Lions drop to 0-5.
Â
Junior
McCabe Sargent put together a performance on the mound that would normally earn him a victory but 7.0 innings of one run baseball was not enough Sunday in game one. Sargent picked up six strikeouts while walking a pair. He scattered five hits over the seven frames. Senior
Joey Antonopoulos suffered the loss, his second of the season. He went 1.0 inning with two hits allowed, a strikeout and a walk. Â
Â
The Lions managed just three hits in the opening game with senior
Jacob Reimold picking up the lone RBI with a game-tying single in the eighth that drove home fellow senior
Amir Wright who had reached on a single earlier in the inning. Prior to the eighth the Lions had just one hit.
Â
Lee scored a run in the sixth on a double down the left field line and then won the game in the ninth with a hit by pitch, error, walk and single.
Â
Game two was a pitcher's battle early with
Ruddy Gomez toeing the rubber for the Lions. He went 5.0 innings while striking out five and walking five. He scattered four hits and allowed two runs while suffering his first loss of the season.
Â
Lee scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth before an RBI double by redshirt sophomore
PJ Barry put the Lions on the board in the seventh. The Flames would respond in the bottom of the inning with a pair of solo home runs to conclude the scoring.
Â
Barry was the lone Lion with more than one hit as he went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a double. Three Lion pitchers split the final three innings of action, each going one full.
Â
The Lions will look to notch their first victory of the season this weekend, Feb. 14-15 as they host Quincy in a three-game series starting with a doubleheader Friday at 3 p.m. Â
