Lions Ledger: Baseball Hosts Valdosta State, Women's Golf and Hoops on the Road

  • Saint Leo women's golf returns to the links a week after taking second at the LMU Spring Kickoff Invitational.
  • The Lions rallied from eight strokes down and carded the best round of the final day of 301 to get within two, falling to co-hosts Wingate.
  • Isabel Nesteus paced the team with a second place finish after carding rounds of 72 and 78, respectively. The junior led the field after round one's even-par.

  • Saint Leo opened the home portion of its 2020 schedule this past weekend with a three-game series with #38 Quincy. The Lions took one of the three contests earning their first win of the season.
  • Senior Amir Wright continues to lead the Lions in batting average at .393 from his lead-off spot. Senior Jake Vander Wal climbed into second after a strong weekend versus Quincy and has a .300 batting average. Vander Wal also leads the team in home runs with four including three over the last two contests. Junior Sam Crail leads the Lions with 11 RBI and trails Vander Wal by just one home run.
  • The Lion pitching staff is being captained by sophomore Ruddy Gomez who pitched a complete game gem against the 38th-ranked Hawks in a Lion victory. He now has a team-best 2.25 ERA and has seen a team-high 16.0 innings of action. He also leads the team in strikeouts with 20 and is nearly double his nearest teammate in that category.
  • Valdosta State opened 2020 splitting at two-game home series with Embry-Riddle, The Blazers then defeated both Florida Tech and Palm Beach Atlantic in neutral site contests at Wingate. They most recently split a two-game shortened series with conference foe Shorter. Their only other loss came on the road at Wingate.
  • Senior Mike Christopoulos has an impressive .435 batting average seven games into the season to lead the Blazers. He has a trio of doubles and a pair of home runs to go along with seven RBI. He leads the team in every one of those categories. Two other Blazers are tied with Christopoulos for the team lead in home runs with two including David Mayberry and Alec Aleywine, a familiar face after competing on the Tampa Spartans squad last season.
  • Senior left-hander Tristan Cone leads the pitching staff with a 2-0 record early in the year. He has a 4.24 ERA which is second among the Blazer starting pitchers. He has seen a team-high 17.0 innings of action and has a team-high 24 strikeouts. Senior left-hander Zach Blankenship is 1-0 this season with 14.0 innings of action.
  • HISTORY: The Lions and Blazers met twice last season similar to this season's schedule. The Lions won at home 6-5 in 10 innings thanks to a Peyton Isaacson walk-off single while the Blazers won their home contest 11-6.

  • Saint Leo looks to extend its win streak to three on Wednesday in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Lions are coming off a 73-56 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic with four shooters reaching double-figures. Alani Gallagher tallied her eighth double-double of her junior campaign, 11th career, with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Meanwhile, Amanda Ulrich picked up her sixth-straight double-digit performance with 14 points.
  • Ulrich holds the team's season-high scoring average putting up 14.8 points per game (ppg) followed by Gallagher with 13.7 ppg and Alex Button with 13.4 ppg. Gallagher leads the Green and Gold off the window with 8.2 rebounds per game (rpg).
  • Saint Leo enters the week as the fourth seed among the Sunshine State Conference standings. Button leads the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.465) while Gallagher is the league's fourth highest rebounder (8.2). In addition, Ulrich sits fifth among the conference scorers (14.8). As a unit, the Lions score 71.3 ppg paired with 36 rpg.
  • Embry-Riddle looks to put a halt to its two-game losing skid. The Eagles dropped an 80-74 decision at Florida Tech on Saturday following a 64-47 loss to Tampa.
  • Sarah Jones and Nikki Tucker lead the Eagles' scoring with a season average of 14.7 ppg and 13.3 ppg, respectively. Tucker is also the team's season rebound leader with 7.1 rpg.
  • The Eagles average 64.7 ppg paired with 34.6 rpg as the seventh seed in the SSC.
  • HISTORY: Saint Leo took the first game of the season series with Embry-Riddle on Wednesday, Jan. 15 in the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The Lions downed the Eagles 79-66 paced by Gallagher's 22 points.

  • Saint Leo travels to Daytona Beach, Fla. Wednesday looking to get back into the win column after dropping a weekend matchup at Palm Beach Atlantic Saturday 93-64.
  • Wade Coomer paced the team with 19 points in the loss to the Sailfish where Kyran McClure (13) and Yalen Reed (10) joined Coomer in double-figures.
  • McClure continues to lead the team in scoring on the year with 21.2 points per game. Isaiah Hill is second on the team at 16.4 ppg.
  • Embry-Riddle hosts Saint Leo after suffering a 77-70 loss at Florida Tech.
  • In the loss to the Panthers, Luka Majstorovic recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Romeo Crouch leads the team in scoring on the year at 18.3 ppg while Majstorovic is second just off the lead at 18.2 ppg while leading the team at 9.0 rebounds per game.
  • HISTORY: The Lions took the first game of the season series with a 92-85 win on Jan. 15 where Majstorovic led all teams with 25 points and 11 rebounds while Kyran McClure led the Lions with 20 points.
