SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo men's basketball dropped a midweek showdown with No. 7 Florida Southern, 114-103 inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
Following the loss, head coach
Lance Randall stated, "Florida Southern is an excellent offensive team. But we completely lost our way defensively. We compounded that with some sloppy turnovers with a couple possessions of poor shot selection in the second half. We will need a little more from everybody this weekend against no. 6 Nova Southeastern."
Â
Isaiah Hill led the charge once again for Saint Leo (13-7, 7-5 SSC) with a game-high 32 points. Hill went 10-for-22 from the field including a 4-for-5 night from beyond the arc while adding an 8-for-10 night from the free-throw line.
Â
Kyran McClure shot a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe during his 17-point performance.
Rusty Moorer (15) and
Tyler Carter (11) rounded out the Lions' double-digit scorers.
Â
Florida Southern (18-2, 10-2 SSC) saw three players drop 20-plus points in the win led by Brett Hanson with 29. Brandon Carroll added 27 off the bench while Jack Rauch tallied 21. Jalyn Hinton (14) and DeAndre Campbell (11) concluded the 10-plus point performers for the Moccasins. Rauch concluded his double-double night with 11 rebounds.
Â
A battle in the first half saw both teams hold early leads before the Green and Gold went up by eight, 24-16 following a three from
Tyler Carter and a layup from
Kyran McClure. The Mocs would come back while the two teams once again traded leads. Florida Southern would see a three go with 1:37 to play to push its lead to six and would go into the break up by four, 55-51.
Â
A quick three out of the gates by
Isaiah Hill to start the second cut it to just one, but the Mocs again would push its lead, this time by 10, 66-56, with 17:25 on the clock. Florida Southern would see its lead go to 19, 86-67 but the Lions would cut it to single digits, 86-77 with a 10-0 run capped by a Hill layup. Another quick burst for the Mocs moved the gap to 13 points, 100-87 before the Green and Gold again got within eight, 100-92. Saint Leo would get within eight points two more times over the final four minutes of action but couldn't crack the Mocs' offense, falling 114-103.
