St. PETERSBURG, Fla. –  Despite cutting the game to just four points with three minutes to play, the Saint Leo women's basketball team dropped a midweek Sunshine State Conference matchup to Eckerd Wednesday night inside the McArthur Center, 61-51.
"Certainly not the result we wanted on the road against a top SSC team," head coach
Anthony Crocitto commented following the 10-point loss. "I admire every bit of our fight after a dismal first half. We can't dig such a big hole for ourselves against anyone but especially a team of Eckerd's caliber."
Gina Brierley was the top performer for Saint Leo (8-10, 4-6 SSC) after dropping a double-double in the loss with 14 points and 12 rebounds with an efficiency rating of 18.
Alex Button added 11 points with five rebounds while
Alani Gallagher scored a game-high 17 points, 10 in the third quarter.
Crocitto added, "Gina is having a great time playing out there and it's showing. Her commitment to what we are doing speaks volumes for where we are going. It was nice to see Alani rise after a suspect first half. She fought and was a big part of bringing us back into the game."
The Lions finished the night shooting 34.6-percent (18-52) from the field while adding a 70.6-percent night from the free-throw line (12-17).Â

Eckerd (12-4, 8-2 SSC) started off with a quick spurt and continued to control the pace of the game going up by 10, 14-4, in the first eight minutes of action before leading by 14 at the half, 32-18.
Â
Saint Leo used a 21-point third quarter to cut the game to just eight points heading to the fourth quarter, with 10 points from Gallagher. Brierley nailed a three to make it a five-point deficit, 47-42, forcing the Tritons to call a timeout. Despite the Green and Gold cutting to just four points, 54-50 with 3:07 on the clock, Eckerd would hold on for the 61-51 win.
Crocitto concluded, "We will regroup and prepare for Tech on the road this Saturday. I believe in this team."
