Lions Yield Tar’s First SSC Season Victory

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team saw 37 second chance points drop for the Rollins Tars Thursday night; as Rollins fans in the Warden Arena boasted a 76-62 victory, the Tars' first Sunshine State Conference win of the season.

Saint Leo owned the lead after the first quarter, 19-15; spearheaded by Casey O'Shaughnessy's nine and Gina Brierley's seven points. A Rollins' three-pointer forced the first lead change of the game in the second quarter at 7:18. The back-and-forth action continued all the way to the halftime break; 31-31.

The Tars put together a seven-point run in the third for a six-point advantage, 46-40. The Lions were later able to trim the Tars big third quarter with seven points on the charity stripe. The Green and Gold's free throw work cut Rollin's lead to 50-46 at the end of the third.

Rollins pulled away with a six-point run to earn a 63-56 advantage with 5:27 left in the game. The Saint Leo offense went cold. The icy spout went on for five critical minutes, hitting only 1-of-9 of their last field goal attempts. The Tars insured the conference 'dub' with three points on the line and a second-chance layup to wrap up the game, 76-62.

Alex Button paced the Saint Leo offense with 17 points followed by Alani Gallagher with 15 points, Amanda Ulrich with 12 points and Casey O'Shaughnessy with 11. The Lions were held to a single double-digit rebound performance as Gallagher brought down 11. The Tars out rebounded the Lions, 65-33, with 28 of the host's rebounds coming from the offensive rim.
