MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Saint Leo volleyball saw its winning streak snapped in a tightly contested Sunshine State Conference matchup at No. 25 Barry Saturday afternoon. The Lions fell 3-1 (24-26, 19-25, 25-21, 23-25) inside the Health & Sports Center in Miami Shores.
Saint Leo saw four players in double-figures in kills and digs with two players registering a double-double in the loss.
Victoria Omoregie paced the team in kills with 14 while
Payton Bellano led the way in digs with 19.
Ashley Quero and
Anna Garrett tallied a double-double with Quero notching it with 13 kills and 15 digs and Garrett 44 assists and 12 digs.
Anilise Fitzi and
Michelle Cuervo finished the night with 12 and 11 kills, respectively while
Fabiola Rosado ended the night with 14 digs.
The Lions dropped the opening set despite holding an early lead for a majority of the set. Saint Leo climbed out to a four-point lead, 7-3, Barry wouldn't go away and closed the gap before the Green and Gold could regain the distance and make it seven, 21-14. The Bucs wouldn't stop and tied things in the opening set at 24-24 on four straight points before Barry took a 1-0 lead on its home court.
Saint Leo once again came flying out of the gates in set two, 5-2, but the Bucs once again closed it to 6-6. Six straight for Barry made it 12-6 before eventually closing the set with a 25-19 score for a 2-0 lead in the match.
After a tight opening in set three, the Lions rattled off five straight to take a slight 13-11 edge. Barry would chip away at the score and tie things at 20-20, but it would be the Lions taking set three 25-21 trading two points for one down the stretch.
Barry would seal the match with a 25-23 final set after an early lead. Saint Leo took a late lead, 19-17 and 23-21, but was unable to hold onto it to tie things dropping the set on four straight points to the Bucs.
Saint Leo returns to the Marion Bowman Activies Center for a three-game home stand with Eckerd on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. followed by Lynn on Oct. 4 and Nova Southeastern on Oct. 5.
